Course Description:

Peer support is not therapy, but it is a powerful tool for connection, trust, and recovery. This three-part mini-course equips peers with the skills to maintain professional role integrity, build meaningful connections through active listening and strategic self-disclosure, and prioritize self-care as an ethical responsibility. Participants will explore how to prevent role drift, apply tactical communication strategies, and develop sustainable practices that protect both their well-being and the individuals they serve.

Designed for both new peer specialists and those seeking a role refresh, this course emphasizes practical tools, ethical grounding, and resilience-building — preparing peers to lead with integrity, empathy, and confidence.

Course Objectives:

  • Define and prevent role drift by setting clear boundaries and upholding peer role integrity.
  • Utilize strategic self-disclosure through active listening to build trust without causing harm.
  • Apply tactical communication skills that foster connection and empower others in recovery.
  • Recognize the importance of self-care as an ethical responsibility to prevent burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.

  • NEXT STEPS: Your registration is not complete until you finish the next steps listed in BELOW. You must enroll in the Choices Event Management System (EMS) PROTRAXX. But payment is required here first. After you submit payment, follow the steps below.

         3. Navigate to the course catalog/schedule and locate the exact courses you have paid for and "enroll" in them.
    There are numerous other courses on this catalog page. To alleviate any future confusion, please be mindful of the dates you have paid for when you enroll in our event management system (EMS)
  • All virtual training will be conducted via Zoom. Zoom instructions will be sent out via automatic email from Protraxx. Check your Spam account if you do not receive an email a few days before your event. Or,  you will find it in the Protraxx account the day before the course.
  • COURSE MATERIAL: You will receive a manual for the Peer & Ethics training no less than 1 week before the training start date. Be sure to put your mailing address in the fields provided. If your address changes between now and the date of mailing, please notify us to ensure you receive your manual. Additional charges may result if not notified.
  • Handouts for all other courses are made available in the DETAILS section of your Protraxx account no less than one week prior to the start date of the course.
  • In the event you need to reschedule after registering for a Choices course, a $20.00 rescheduling fee will be required.
  • *** Cancellations must be received within two weeks of the start date to be rescheduled or refunded. All refunds are subject to a processing fee. No exceptions.
